A fleet of 250 e-scooters is giving people a fun new way to travel around Ballarat.

The purpose-built Neuron e-scooters can be used on the city’s bicycle paths and lanes, separated and shared paths, and roads with a maximum speed of 50kph. They are not permitted on footpaths and high-speed roads.

E‐scooters can be hired through the Neuron Mobility app available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Riders must be at least 18 years old but a driver’s licence is not required (drink and drug driving restrictions apply).

The e-scooters can cover a 25km2 riding area within Ballarat including Ballarat Central, Ballarat North, Lake Wendouree, Eureka, Golden Point and Redan.

They travel at a maximum of 20km/h and have a weight limit of 140kg.

Below is a map of the city’s main e-scooter parking stations.

Single trips cost $1 to unlock the e‐scooter and 45 cents per minute thereafter.

Three‐day ($25), weekly ($33) and monthly ($45) hire options are also available. This allow users to ride as many times as they want for up to 90 minutes per day for a fixed affordable price.

An app‐controlled lock secures a helmet to the e‐scooter, electronically releasing it at the start of each booking.

Geofencing technology controls where e‐scooters are ridden and parked, and how fast they can travel in certain areas.

This includes a no riding zone in the Bridge Mall and a no parking zone around Lake Wendouree.

There are also various slow zones in popular places such as the Armstrong Street North dining precinct.

Ballarat is the only regional Victorian city participating in the state government’s 12-month e-scooter trial program.

Launched on 15 December 2021, the trial will determine if e-scooters are an appropriate permanent fixture of the Ballarat and wider Victorian transport network.

Leading e‐scooter operator Neuron Mobility operates globally as well as in a range of capital and regional Australian cities including Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Darwin, Bundaberg, Townsville and shortly in Hobart and Launceston.

Riders are covered by Neuron’s third-party rider liability insurance.
